Marte' Hepburn is our February 2018 Athlete of the Month, and we couldn’t be more proud to have her support! Marte’ describes herself as a Senior Cannabis Athlete. She goes above and beyond to break more than just the stereotype of cannabis, but also the stigma of age slowing you down. In her 60’s, she’s out rock climbing, running marathons, and traveling the world!
Ever since I gave up meat and started focusing on a plant based diet, I’ve been learning new ways to satisfy old cravings. These Vegan Chipotle Buffalo Cauliflower Tacos hit the spot when I’m craving something spicy, crunchy, and delicious. The crunch and density from the cauliflower make the meal feel hearty and filling. The olive oil and avocado make up for the bulk of the calories in healthy fats, and the chipotle buffalo spice gives it an amazing flavor profile that’s sure to put this on your menu’s regular rotation.
Those are three words I would never have chosen to describe myself and yet this past year I realized that all three do indeed apply. So let's break it down.
Senior...at age 66 I absolutely find myself in that category. I believe my issue with owning up to it is that there's an image of seniors that I don't relate to. You know the retiring one that seems to move a bit slower and stops doing the things they used to do. I am thrilled to find that now that I have arrived, that image is bogus! I have met an amazing group of seriously seniors that are out there rocking their retirement...running, biking, sailing, hiking, climbing...you name it and they are doing it.
We are so excited to announce our official 2018 race schedule! This year we will be competing in the entire La Sportiva Trail Run Series, the Realm of Caring 5k, and we're putting together a team for the Ragnar Trail Relay!! It's going to be a big year for MJFITNUT and we're so grateful you're with us in this journey!
We invite any and all who would like to come race with us or cheer the team on at any of these events! Together we will all change the perception of cannabis!
MJFITNUT has been announced as Cannabis Team of the Year in January's issue of Vegas Cannabis Magazine (p67)! Hosted by Redefine Cannabis in 2017, the annual Redefine Cannabis Awards had several categories within different sections of the cannabis industry. One section was Running, Fitness, and Athletics, which included nominees from all around the nation. "These awards recognize outstanding strides being made in educating the masses on the connection cannabis has with fitness and athletics".
It's been just over a year since we started Mjfitnut. We started creating content on social media at first, and then we launched our website. After a couple months of searching for opportunities, we landed our own weekly CannaFitness column on Leaf of the Week which expanded to On Denver and then to About Boulder.
Determined to increase income from content creation in 2018...
We have spent the last four decades being told about the dangers of marijuana, Reefer Madness, Just Say No, DARE, we’ve heard it all. However, what the government has failed to do is tell us about the benefits when it is used properly. Let me tell you what cannabis actually can do…
Whether we consume cannabis or not, we should all pledge to learn more about the plant. Cannabis and cannabis use will continue to have stigmas until we get smart about our approach to this medicinal herb. Through educating ourselves, and teaching others what we learn, the stigmas will slowly dissolve. Plus, there is a growing demand for the cannabis-savvy in the legal cannabis market.
Deuvall Dorsey, who is also well known in the cannabis and athletics industry as The Vegas 420 Runner, is our January 2018 Athlete of the Month. Deuvall is one of the most active “stoners” there is. His resume of accomplishments as an athlete, an academic, and cannabis advocate is one to inspire us all. Below are just a few highlights of his current roles, former positions, and his many achievements.
Are YOU doing everything you can to protect the cannabis industry and someone’s miracle or are you going to remain complacent until the day YOU need a miracle and it’s no longer available for you because the generation who started the movement wasn’t responsible enough to handle it.
Cannabis provides a whole host of added benefits for the consumer whether its being used recreationally or not… the body doesn’t know the difference… it only knows it’s endocannabinoid system is happily humming along searching for road blocks on the road to perfect homeostasis.
I truly feel blessed and extremely fortunate to be alive today, and I attribute a great deal of this good fortune to cannabis. I wasn’t always the well behaved, friendly, and positive person I am today. I spent the majority of my life in a very dark place, especially as a child, and I’m lucky to have turned my life around. There was a time when I was on a road only leading to prison, death, or both. It was at this time I came to a crossroads, and I decided to change my life for the better.
... I knew I needed to make drastic changes in my life, or I wouldn’t survive another 5 years. At just 40 years old I was exhausted, overweight, unhealthy, and slowly killing myself through over-consumption of alcohol, nutrition-less food, and too many pharmaceuticals.
As a reminder -- the inspiration for this three-part series is to see how a smoke break following semi-regular smoking affects dreams. Below are four takeaways from this experiment.
1. Dreams are vivid.
My dreams, almost immediately, have become vivid and rememberable, with crystal clear images and scenes. I wake up in the morning or from a nap and have to recalibrate myself to the real world because the images in my dreams are so real. Sometimes I find myself wishing I didn't wake up because I'm so interested in the reel playing through my mind. On the same note, I find myself looking forward to
In completing the entire 420 Games 2017 National Tour, we got the chance to meet a lot of incredible people and businesses. One of which was Katina Morales, also known as Betty Khronic, which is the name of her company. Betty Khronic offers a selection of CBD and THC infused energy bars, made with raw, locally sourced, vegan ingredients. We had the pleasure of sampling the CBD bars at The 420 Games in LA. They were Cuban Coffee flavored, and
I see a lot of people follow lifting schedules like this – they lift to work one muscle group each day of the week. I used to follow this type of schedule too. You will maybe get some results doing this, but there’s an incredibly more efficient way to get better results in the weight room.
The cannabis market is changing. As cannabis starts to merge into the health and wellness category, slowly losing the stereotypical images and stigmas, women and seniors are becoming a growing demographic. This shift in clientele is putting new demands on the cannabis industry.
When Heather and I flew out to Portland, OR for The 420 Games we had the experience of a lifetime. Heather took 2nd place in Oregon, and being our first time in Portland, we had a great adventure. As much fun as we had, the highlight of our trip was the ride to and from the airport with High End Transportation.
I beat myself up physically, by challenging myself in training so I can be stronger, faster, and better than the day before. Training isn’t just the work you put in at the gym, or on the track, it’s also a lot about recovery. I consume cannabis in many different ways, for different reasons, as detailed in last week’s article, Consuming Cannabis as an Athlete. This week we’re going to take a closer look at topicals, how they play a role in training and recovery, and what you can do to start using topicals into your everyday wellness routines.
If you're reading this blog chances are you don't fit the “Lazy-Stoner” profile. People drawn to this site tend to be like-minded, active, and share a love of cannabis. I'm thankful for it too, a community out there fighting the stigma. Yet, I can't shake the idea of the lazy-stoner. Its a thing for a reason, and outside of our lovely community of active/pro-active stoners there are many people that fit the definition of couch-locked. If you've ever been to a 420 rally in Denver you've seen them first hand, I actually stopped going to these events because of the type of people that show up.
After a couple of days of not smoking, I started to have unbelievably vivid, clear, detailed dreams that I remembered. I’d wake up in the morning and think to myself that if I didn’t know any better, I would not be hard-pressed to believe my dreams had actually happened. Sometimes I wouldn’t remember my dream until later in the day. Other times I’d recall it right as I woke up. There is absolutely a difference in my dreams when I stopped smoking.
I try think of it like nutrition for my endocannabinoid system, and just like food, I don’t want to over-do it. Instead of seeking the instant, and short-term, euphoria of being high, I started to appreciate the long-term benefit of healthfulness instead.
Modern medicine is a wonderful thing. All of the uncomfortable sensations you can name, we have a pill for. For many of us, a quick-fix solution like popping a Xanax, reaching for the Alive, or whatever other magic pills the doctor recommended us is a great way to get through the day. Whether it be escaping the stress of the moment, getting over a cold, or managing pain there's always a pill to get you through it. Many don't ask much, and what could we ask? The majority of us aren't doctors, so we trust the person who is supposed to know what is best for our health. Knowledge can be scary, and if you dig in and do a bit of research chances are you'll find that whatever you've been prescribed, or have started taking over the counter, actually tends to have some pretty adverse health effects. Even the ones that won't kill you take a toll on the brain and the body.
Part of living an active and healthy lifestyle is flexing the creative muscle as well as your actual muscles. When I mention the creative muscle I am referring to the brain. In the year 2017 taking care of yourself and being fit is almost trendy. For years gyms were reserved for bodybuilders, but these days people from all walks of life go out of their way to take care of themselves. However many of us forget to take care of our brains. After a good workout, we go home, flip on Netflix and tune out. That's not bad every now and then but we spend so much time turning our brains off and tuning out these days that many of us live lives with some level of displeasure, and some level of dulled thinking.
