How a Pro MMA Fighter Uses Hemp as Fuel With Adam Meredith

Today we sit down with a long time friend and professional MMA fighter Adam Meredith to discuss his use of hemp protein. Being a professional MMA fighter is rough. It’s rough on the body, the mind, and at times the spirit. Between hours of intense training, battling it out in the cage, and winning or losing, it’s a sport that requires a lot of discipline and strength, both physical and mental. In order to stay at the top of his game Adam chooses hempseed as as his go to protein source in between meals. Hemp protein and hempseed products are terrific sources of protein. They contain all 20 known amino acids, which include the 9 essential amino acids the body is unable to produce. This makes hemp protein great for fueling your body with the blocks it needs to build and repair after training.

Physical strength isn’t the only concern inside in the cage. Mental strength is just as important and on top of the high protein content, hempseed is also an excellent source of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids, which has been described as a perfect 3:1 ratio. Some studies have found that these essential fatty acids play a role in brain function and can help ward off Alzheimer’s disease. In other words, hempseed can provide you the nutrients you need to keep your mind sharp and healthy. Let’s see what Adam has to say about his hemp protein use.

MJFITNUT:

With so many options when it comes to picking out a protein supplement, why do you chose hemp protein?

Adam Meredith:

For me, I prefer food over supplementation, but when I do need a supplement, I still adhere to the same guidelines I would for food. Meaning, I believe food should be ingredients, not have them. So unlike many of the proteins and other health products on the market, the hemp protein I use only has one ingredient, hemp. At 35% protein by weight, hemp is a naturally high protein food that provides the most useable source of protein for the human body. And with it being so bioavailable and easily digested, you're not going to bloat or get gassy like you may with an animal based protein. There are numerous other nutritional benefits, but for me, the bottom line comes down to how I feel. For me, I feel great on hemp and can preform at the level I need to.

MJFITNUT:

Would you recommend hemp protein to anyone else?

Adam Meredith:

Absolutely, 100%. I think everyone can benefit by switching to, or adding, a natural, plant based protein to their diet. I would recommend adding hemp to everyone's diet. Even if it's not in the form of hemp protein. In addition to protein, I also have raw hemp hearts as a major part of my diet. I add them to my yogurt at times or will just eat them by the handful.

MJFITNUT:

What is your favorite way to consume it?

Adam Meredith:

I typically add my protein to my morning smoothie. The hemp protein I use doesn't have added flavor, so while I personally don't mind the taste - it tastes kind of nutty actually - it's best in smoothies I've found. I've mixed it with only almond milk, sometimes orange juice even, but smoothies are my go to.

MJFITNUT:

What brand do you use and is there a reason?

Adam Meredith:

I use Nutiva brand organic hemp protein. Again, I'm a huge believer in your food should be ingredients, not have them, and the only ingredient in this protein is hemp. Nothing else. For me, simplicity is key, and with Nutiva's hemp protein, you're getting what you need without all of the extra unnecessary ingredients.

One thing I believe all nutrition conscious people can agree on is less is more when it comes to ingredients, and hemp protein and hempseed products can add simplicity to their lengthy benefit list. To recap, hemp protein contains all 20 known amino acids, which includes the 9 essential amino acids our bodies can’t produce, making it a wonderful source of protein. It also contains Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids which help with brain function. This makes hemp a one two combo for strengthening both the body and the mind. Take it from someone whose profession involves fueling their body to perform at the highest level and you can walk away from the kitchen looking and feeling like a gladiator. If it’s good enough to fuel a professional MMA fighter, it’s definitely good enough for me. Do you use hemp protein or hempseed products? Tell us your favorites!
