We don’t know what was more incredible, our first 420 Games experience, or getting to visit California, and seeing the Pacific Ocean for the very first time. We really got to experience Cali in high class thanks to the 420 Games. All of our travels and fitness activities were fueled by the many edible samples we received, as well as all the sample topicals, which aided in our recovery. It’s so hard to narrow down a favorite part of our trip to Los Angeles, when we got to do and see so much! Our afternoon after the 420 Games was spent walking from Santa Monica to Venice, for lunch and back, before heading to the after party. The following morning was spent relaxing, and taking part in some active recovery on the beautiful beach of Santa Monica. We were even able to squeeze in a scenic bike ride before catching our first Uber to LAX, and onto our free first class flights, home to Colorado.
From the moment we touched down in Los Angeles, we could feel the west coast energy, and it felt good. Having not checked bags, within minutes of exiting the plane, we were making our way out of LAX. It was on a brief ride down an escalator when I removed my zippered hoodie, unveiling the MJFITNUT shirt for the first time this far West. At that exact moment, as we were deep in giddy conversation, we were interrupted by an airline worker passing by, who pointed at us and said, “Hey, cool shirt!”, to which we sincerely exclaimed, “Thank you!”.
We had only been in LA for 5 minutes and were already feeling the love! We made our way to the exit, and skipped the line of shuttles, cabs, and private drivers, in exchange for a 15 minute walk to the local bus station, and a total travel fare of $2.50 from LAX to Santa Monica Pier. It was on this bus ride where an older man in his late 40’s decided to engage us in conversation because he liked our shirts!
He went on to talk about how he believes marijuana can really help people, and how fitness, nutrition, and meditation are all important parts of a well balanced, healthy life. Before the three of us knew it, the bus was slowing down at our destination. As goodbyes were exchanged, the man said, “You’re really an inspiration”. We were touched and couldn't find the words to accurately describe how amazing it felt to know our mission had inspired someone. We would have been happy enough with the positive responses we had already received when we started getting shouts of, “Nice shirts!”, from people walking and even riding bikes, as we navigated to our hotel from the Santa Monica Pier. The universe felt on our side, and seemed to be offering nothing but positivity and encouragement!
After our unbelievable day at the 420 Games, and having just sorted out our massive pile of samples, it was time to check out Santa Monica and Venice along our way to lunch. Before leaving, we sprayed ourselves with some Xternal analgesic spray, and put on a Pure Ratios 96 hour medicated patch, to help with recovery from the race. We also decided to snack on a few edibles, to tide us over until lunch, and to have us feeling on point for the after party. Jambo Superfoods 10mg OG Mango Fruit Leather samples were on the menu, and they were so good, followed by a couple more of one of our favorites, Betty Khronic’s 10mg energy bar samples!
Now properly fueled, the inner explorers in us came out, and started towards Venice. The sights and sounds along the way were familiar to any highly populated beach area. Our ears were full of footsteps and bicycle spokes as walkers, joggers, and cyclists made their way along the busy paths, working their way in and out of the pedestrian sea. There were a lot of neat sights along the way, including this cool metal art workshop.
The path from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach is lined with several independent artists displaying their crafts and services. The number of cool things is far too many to mention them all. We did have the chance to pick up a unique piece of 420 artwork!
We continued our journey down the sandy stretch of golden beachside along Venice, and were captivated by the warm beaming sunshine, wind blown palm trees, and vibes near the shoreline. We weren’t surprised to find out that Venice Beach is the busiest facility operated by the Department of Recreation and Parks, and attracts an average of 30,000 people daily! Compelled by music, the sight of colorful balloons, and a large group of people gathered near the ocean, we made our way towards the waves to find ourselves at the skate park pool, just in time to catch the boarders performing their sick tricks!
As we gravitated back towards the boardwalk, we were drawn in yet again by another large group watching street performers! These guys were doing all sorts of crazy jumps and flips. They were even attempting to jump and flip over 3 people standing on the sidewalk! Luckily for them, and for the people they were jumping over, it was a success and unbelievable to witness!
Of course, Venice wouldn’t be Venice without bodybuilders along the coastal shores! We stopped in amazement, alongside others, who were observing the athletes as they performed feats of great strength at Muscle Beach’s outdoor gym. This guy was making his full bodyweight, upside down dips look so effortless!
At this point we had arrived just in time to stop our stomachs from growling at the Original Poke in Venice. We were enticed to try their adventurous bowls because of the delicious sashimi grade ahi, mixed with soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and a delicious variety of vegetables on your choice of rice or quinoa. We got one of each, and sat down in front of the restaurant, people watching, as we waited for our food. Our order was in the window and our mouths watered. The ahi and veggies were such a great combo after such a long day of activity.
As if that wasn’t enough, we also got the acai bowl, made with pure organic acai sorbet, topped with organic hemp granola, coconut, banana and honey! If you go to Poke, TRY THIS! It’s totally worth it! The blend of flavors in the bowl were out of this world! Each bite was a spoonful of deliciousness as the flavors combined with the crunch of the hemp granola and coconut, in between soft bites of honey covered banana and sweet smooth sorbet. Just then, we realized the time had passed very quickly along our adventure and we hoofed the 3.3 miles from Poke to the 420 games rooftop after party!
On top of enjoying a healthy and nutritious lunch, and creating a fond memory, we also earned 1,000 American Airlines miles for our meal. All we had to do was spend over $25, and review it online within 30 days! This is one of the several strategies we used, that helped us get free first class flights, and hotel stays, for our entire trip! At the end of our day we were full, faded, and had walked more than eleven miles, and we were exhausted.
Earlier in the day, at the 420 Games, we had the pleasure of speaking with the enthusiastic team from Papa and Barkley. They were generous enough to give us samples of their releaf™ soothing pain balm. This balm is fast acting and provided hours of pain relief with all-natural botanical balm infused with the highest potency cannabinoid content on the market. Their full size jars contain over 400 mg of cannabinoid content per 50ml jar, which is activated with a 3:1 THC:CBD ratio. We split one whole sample between the two of us and spread the 20mg each of CBD on our feet and ankles. The balm rubbed in very nicely, like a lotion, and wasn’t too oily. The 20mg of CBD took effect quickly and we both felt relief from our 11 mile urban hike.
Venice Relief was gracious enough to give us several samples of their handmade quality skin care products. They are 100% natural, and enriched,n with certified organic, non-GMO, US grown, medicinal-grade hemp CBD from Colorado! For more information on description of uses, directions and each ingredient benefits, you can find the details on their website venicerelief.com. We tried all of our products we received, which included, lavender and orange skin and roll on oil, mineral bath soak, healing tattoo aftercare balm (for our minor sunburns) and a CBD muscle gel. We both love the smell and benefits of essential oils and particularly enjoyed the lavender and orange essential oil choices.
The morning after our 420 Games race, and several extra miles of walking, our legs and feet were feeling the burn, but felt extra good from all of the wonderful samples we got to try. Today was going to be our last day in California and we wanted to go out with a bang! We also needed some supplements for extra recovery and fuel for our planned activities so we broke out the edibles!
We got to enjoy ChooseLove caramels! ChooseLove offers caramels made with locally-sourced fruit alongside the high quality cannabis oil infused into their amazing goodies. We tried their vegan coconut caramel with black lava salt option and it was awesome! The caramel and coconut was sweet to the taste and complimented perfectly by the black lava salt. Their additional flavors include apple pie, chocolate, sweet hibiscus, and blood orange.
Pura Vida, spanish for “pure life”, is an astonishing and nutrient dense superfood product company. Out of all the edibles we got to test, these were our clear winner for favorite! We received samples of their Chocolate Jubilee granola, and Cinnamaple and Salty Ocean seeds. We agree that all are excellent flavors! We’re new fans and love how they create these delicious products to medicate and fuel your body, without sacrifice, all at the same time! The granola is delicious and makes for a perfect source of THC and carbohydrates. Both the Cinnamaple and the Salty Ocean seeds were absolutely terrific! The combination of THC and healthy fats makes for a powerful fuel when you're on the go.
Once we medicated, we started out on our day.
There’s something about the rich aroma of a dark roast black coffee that seems to soothe the soul, as the steam reaches out through the lip of the plastic lid. It could just be us, but this soothing feeling is only amplified in the cool, dim hours before a sunrise. As the scent of our Starbuck’s Sumatra Dark Roast rose into the city of Santa Monica, it was met in harmony by the beautiful bouquet of marijuana smoke, as we sparked up our first joint for the day.
The view of the Pacific Ocean’s horizon was breathtaking, as the sun’s rays rose over the city, casting a warm glow on the Golden State’s coastline. We still couldn’t believe we were really here, as the sound of the waves crashing into the shore argued otherwise. Besides taking in the raw beauty, only millions of years of sea tides and tectonic shifts can create, both of us had been eyeing the fitness park since arriving, and couldn’t wait to try out some of the equipment!
The rings looked especially fun, and even though Heather actually killed it each time she went, we managed to screw up the video recording every time! Once we got it all figured out, and working correctly, she had tired herself out on the first few successful attempts, so we gave up on the video. Antonio took his chance at the highest climbing rope we could find. He tried his own attempt at the rings after the rope, but his hands were done after that. Both of us had a blast getting some strength training in at the beach, but we didn't stop there!
We had some time to kill before heading to the airport, and it only seemed right to spend it getting in some cardio on a scenic bike ride through Santa Monica, completely fueled by Pura Vida edibles! Thanks to Heather’s excellent travel planning, we already knew all about the local Breeze Bike Share bike program. The convenient app on our phone directed us right to the closest Breeze Bike Rental station. Rental was only $7/hour per bike, and they were prorated by the minute.
It felt great to feel the warm sunshine and wind on our faces. As we rode through the residential neighborhoods, we admired the homes, commenting on features and choices for landscaping. Passing all these streets lined with palm trees, Antonio couldn’t help for a moment, to imagine himself as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop.
Once the reminiscent 80’s humor, and the movie’s theme song had finished playing in my head, we stopped for a moment to rest when Heather was attacked by, what we thought, looked like a cross between an octopus and a fern. We quickly realized it was all a misunderstanding and were on our way.
After some more pedal turning action, we decided to call it a day, so we parked the bikes at the nearest Breeze station, and stopped at a convenience store for some water to rehydrate, and wash down the last of our edibles. It was then time to order up our first Uber. That’s right, we had never Uber’d, and despite some pretty interesting stories we’ve heard, our experience was great! Our driver was super chill, and he opened up once we asked if he was a cannabis supporter. We had a great conversation. He told us what we are doing is awesome, and wished us luck in our endeavors.
Then finally, after one hour in the airport, two hours on the plane, and two more hours driving, we were back at our cozy home in the mountains of Colorado. As much as we loved California, it felt so good to be home, and about to be sleeping in our own bed. It felt even better to know from the moment our logo was let loose in LAX, to the last minutes of our Uber ride back to the airport, the people of California showed us nothing but love and positivity. We seriously couldn’t have had a better time in LA! We can't wait for our return to Cali on August 26th, to compete in the San Francisco 420 Games, and we hope we'll have the chance to check out the world's first cannabis gym, Power Plant Fitness!
There were a lot of firsts in our trip. It was our first 420 Games event, our first time witnessing the West Coast, and even our first Uber ride, to name a few. MJFITNUT believes going to new places, and trying new things, elevates your mind in a way that can’t be compared. Doing something new, or going to a new place can be uncomfortable. You don’t know the people, the area, or what you’re doing! It’s all new, but stepping out of your comfort zone allows you to grow through your experiences. Part of our goal, to create a positive image for marijuana consumers, includes us sharing with you some of our first experiences.
We hope to lead by example, by breaking out of our comfort zones to learn and grow. No one is perfect, and we’re no exception. We might make mistakes along the way (still can’t believe we missed Heather on the rings!) but we will learn, and grow. Part of our plan is to show people there’s always room for improvement, and that’s ok. We hope to accomplish this by sharing all of these new experiences, and letting them serve as demonstrations that anyone of any ability can elevate their mind, body, and self. We aren’t just doing this to create a business. It’s so much more than that. We are doing this to show we can improve, others can improve, and the federal government’s stance on marijuana, can, and must improve!
