MJFITNUT was on the ground in Denver for the entire 4/20 week! The first three days were spent canvasing dispensaries in the area to help spread awareness about the 420 Games. All of the dispensaries we went to were so supportive. It’s incredible how supportive the entire cannabis community has been, in welcoming MJFITNUT. Our big event on the day of 4-20 was Denver’s 420 Rally.
This may have been our first 420 Rally, but the rally was started over 20 years ago, by a renowned cannabis activist, named Ken Gorman. It was originally created as an act of protest for the legalization of marijuana and hemp. What first began as official smoke-ins on the steps of Colorado’s Capital building to bring together activists, in hopes of making a difference, has since grown into a massive gathering of pot smoking tourists, showing up to have more of a party than to protest.
With that being said, there is still a lot of good that comes from an event like the 420 Rally, because not everyone who shows up is just there to party. We had the chance to walk around and visit with a lot of business owners, who were there, not only to take advantage of a mass collection of their consumer base in one location, but also to help educate, and spread awareness for legalization.
One such group who showed to make a difference was our sponsor, Colorado NORML. For anyone who may not know, Colorado NORML is the state chapter for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. They are a non-for profit organization dedicated to reforming marijuana laws, and protecting the marijuana consumer. It is their mission to assist in shifting the public opinion of marijuana to achieve the end of prohibition.
Colorado NORML’s Executive Director, Ashley Weber, and her team, had a terrific booth set up to help make a difference! Being a non-for profit, donations and volunteers make a big difference in the fight against prohibition. For this reason, Ashley and her team were on the front lines, collecting donations, recruiting new members, and fundraising with their killer swag! If you’re in Colorado, find out how you can help here.
Wherever you live, check out your local NORML chapters, and find out what you can do help. Even the smallest effort of support will go a long way towards making significant change.
Colorado NORML weren’t the only ones with a booth set out to make difference. The two of us had the pleasure of meeting the owners of another MJFITNUT sponsor, Black Rock Originals. Nick and Tommy have created a product which embodies the lifestyle of today’s active professional. In personally living the life themselves, consisting of activities like skiing, camping, and traveling the country, when not grinding away at the office, they have designed a stylish line of travel stash box systems and accessories, with today’s consumer in mind.
Besides their excellent line of products, Black Rock Originals, and MJFITNUT teamed up in sharing a common goal. Nick and Tommy have created a brand “that actively supports individuals who debunk the lazy stereotype”. This is the type of positive message we all need to get behind in order to really help demonstrate marijuana doesn’t make you lazy, unsuccessful, or a bad person!
The 420 Rally had so many businesses, and individuals, who showed out to support positive awareness. We really couldn’t name them all. We didn’t spend all of our time visiting booths though. We spent a lot of our day informing people about the 420 Games, by handing out notecards, having conversations, and putting up flyers. In the middle of doing all this promo we bumped into a local Colorado company doing some promotion of their own. Our sponsor Craft was on the spot handing out gear, and we scored some cool shirts!
Craft is not just another cannabis company. They are constantly challenging themselves to improve their processes and products to give consumers the highest-quality concentrates, strains, and edibles. Craft spreads positive awareness by acting as conscientious community members. They are always looking for ways to give back, and help patients. They encourage you contact them with feedback and other charitable causes.
This is another example, of the several positive focused businesses, and people, who were at Denver’s 420 Rally, with the goal of making a making a difference. It’s businesses like Craft, non-for profits like Colorado NORML, and people like Nick and Tommy with Black Rock Originals, that inspire us to step up and do our part to make change. The only way we’re going to win over the public opinion on marijuana, is prove, not only is it safe, but it doesn’t make you lazy, unsuccessful, or a bad person. It’s this reason, that it saddened us to see the onslaught of negative publicity brought on by the media, not that is wasn’t somewhat justified.
MJFITNUT left the rally around 2:30 to spend our 4:20 elevating our minds at Denver’s Aquarium. When the clock struck 4:20 that day, we may have been gawking at colorful jellyfish, but newspapers say the security gates at the rally were flattened, as people impatiently stampeded into Denver’s Civic Center. Then there were reports of a shooting during the concert, and everyone in Colorado knows all about the trash incident. Now the mayor is calling for a review of the event, petitions are being formed to end it, and it seems every media outlet is against it.
Despite the positive awareness we, and several others, set out to achieve that day, our positive light was heavily shaded by these clouds of negativity. This is the part that makes us sad, however, we do agree the public has the right, and a reason to be upset. What we believe needs to be learned here is, there is a big difference between positive awareness and negative awareness. Our actions and our choices at events like the 420 Rally represent more than ourselves. We need to remember, when we gather as a collective audience, we are no longer a group of individuals with single voices. Together we become whole.
The majority of people who weren’t at the 420 Rally are not going to remember the individual people, and business’s who showed up to spread positive awareness. They’re only going to remember how the 420 Rally, as a whole, was spotlighted with negativity, even though, this negativity was brought on by the poor and irresponsible choices of the minority of those in attendance. It is for this reason, it is so important to spread positive awareness. If we, as individuals, can make choices that reflect either positively or negatively on marijuana as a whole, then we need to focus on the positive.
Chances are, if you’re on our page reading this, you already know how important it is, and we thank you for everything you do to help demonstrate cannabis use in a positive manner. If you didn’t already know, now you do. We hope you realize the impact you can have on ending prohibition. Alone, our choices can make positive changes for ourselves, but together, our choices can make positive change, and improve the quality of life for millions of men, women, and children all across the country.
